On Tuesday 29th August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expanded, effectively doubling the size of the zone to now include all London Broughs and the City of London.
ULEZ was launched in central London back in April 2019 to improve air quality in the City, specifically to reduce the harmful emissions from petrol and diesel engines – nitrogen oxides NO and NO2, also collectively known as NOx.
These harmful gases were reduced by introducing a daily charge for any vehicles entering the zone which didn’t meet certain emission standards. This encouraged drivers of high emission vehicles to limit driving into London and either upgrade their vehicles or find an alternative mode of transport such as using public transport or cycling.
In order to further help tackle pollution and improve air quality in London, the scheme expanded in October 2021 to include roads inside the north and south circular, and has now expanded once again.
As of September 2023, it costs £12.50 per day for cars and vans which don’t meet the required Euro emissions to enter the ULEZ.
This very much depends on the vehicle and how it was manufactured – unfortunately there’s no hard and fast rule to know if your vehicle complies. Generally, any petrol vehicle produced since January 2006, and any diesel vehicle produced since September 2015 should be compliant.
However, a number of older vehicles may also be compliant. Petrol vehicles that meet Euro 4 emission standards are compliant, as are diesel vehicles that meet Euro 6 standards.
It’s always best to check if a specific vehicle is ULEZ compliant by checking the registration number on TfL’s online vehicle checker.
